The conversation with his mother had been playing in Sawyer’s mind in the hours since he’d returned home that afternoon. Alone. And even though his rental house was stuffed with brand new furniture, there was no denying that it still felt empty.

Which…maybe was normal?

Maybe the house was just too big for one person to make it feel really lived in. Like a home. But even if that was the case, he hadn’t really noticed just how quiet it was before.

He imagined what life was like in the house next door—Michael’s house. With Lilly there, Michael probably never felt lonely, or alone. And it was almost certainly never quiet. That was probably why Michael seemed perfectly content being single. He had his hands full being a single parent. Why would he want to add the pressures of dating to the mix? And when would he even find the time?

Sawyer had thought he was content, too. But now he wasn’t so sure. And he obviously couldn’t just go out and adopt a kid, simply because he wanted some company. A dog, maybe, but that wasn’t really the kind of companionship he was craving.

As he undressed and climbed under the crisp, fresh sheets on his big, empty king-sized bed, an idea struck him. He jumped back out of bed and grabbed his phone off the dresser, scrambling back under the covers and letting his eyes adjust to the bright screen for a moment before searching out the gay dating app all his friends back in LA had raved about. They were constantly finding dates—and more—using the app, so it had to be worth a shot.

And even though he didn’t personally know any available guys, surely there would be someone who lived relatively close. Even in the worst case scenario, if he had to drive an hour to Oklahoma City for a date, that wouldn’t be so bad.

In less than a minute, he’d downloaded the app and installed it on his phone. Setting up his profile was a little trickier, since he had to get out of bed—again. But he needed a selfie that obscured his face, and he didn’t exactly have tons of those lying around.

For a moment, he considered, taking a shirtless pic, but while he was happy enough with his body, he didn’t want to send the wrong message. He wanted a date. Something romantic. Someone who wouldn’t mind taking things slow. A hookup might be fun, and maybe getting laid would actually calm his hormones a little, but he wanted to at least try the dating route first.

If that didn’t work, he could take more immediate action.

Finally satisfied with the angle and lighting in the picture he’d taken, he discarded the other twenty-three previous ones he’d just taken and uploaded it to the app. Now he just needed a name.

Something simple, that he could remember. Preferably something close to his actual name. Something… something…

Sam.

He typed it in, giving himself a moment to adjust to the thought and the look before he hit submit.
